The main research directions of IMCS UL are
telecommunications, Internet technologies and their applications,
system modeling and design, simulation of physical and technological
processes, natural language processing, theoretical investigations in
mathematics etc. The Institute houses the graduate (master) studies in

In 1992 IMCS UL has founded the Academic Network LATNET as a separate unit of the Institute. In 2007 it was renamed to SigmaNet,
the National Research and Education Network (NREN), which provides
access to the GEANT2 infrastructure and ofers varius services.
The network was created with support of
international projects by EC - Baltbone-1, Baltbone-2, Baltic
Information Infrastructure Pilot Project BIIP etc. LATNET was
successful in implementing the wireless access to the Internet in
expending wireless Internet services to 25 of 's regions.
SigmaNet investigates the possibilities of implementing the new telecommunication technologies in business and everyday life. SigmaNet is very active also in various projects about security, connectivity, applications. SigmaNet is a member of RIPE, TERENA, CEENet.
IMCS UL has participated in many other EC funded projects, including GN2, GEANT, EASYCRAFT, IDEALIST, CULTIVATE, INTACCOMP, MolPage and others.
