GridGuide : (Lund University)

Lund University is Scandinavia’s largest institution for education and research. It was founded in 1666, and consists of 8 faculties and several research centres and institutes, hosting 42 500 students and 6 000 employees. The group of researchers from the Experimental High Energy Physics division of the Institute of Physics was among the first in Sweden to get involved in Grid computing. In 2000, the division started contributing to the EU DataGrid project through participation in the ATLAS experiment at CERN. The same year, Lund co-initiated the Nordic Grid project which became known as the NorduGrid. One of the first applications was intensive computing simulation based on the famous Lund Model of quark fragmentation, developed in the Physics Department and used as a standard tool all over the world.

The Grid activities reached a new phase in 2006 when the Nordic Data Grid Facility (NDGF) was established. In the same year, the EU KnowARC project was launched, and Lund researches take a leading part in it: the Lund group always has been a central actor in developing the Advanced Resurce Connector Grid middleware (ARC) and the NorduGrid platform. The University is directly involved in providing Grid-enabled processing of ATLAS data and simulated data through the NDGFTier1 and Swedish Tier2 centres.
