Bio-informatics

The Edmond J. Safra Program for Bioinformatics was established in Tel Aviv University (TAU) in the fall of 2005. The program has been made possible by a generous donation from the Edmond J. Safra Foundation, obtained following a nation-wide scientific competition for Centers of Excellence among Israeli universities.

Complementary support is provided by TAU. The vision of the Safra Program is to preserve and enhance the role of TAU as an international leader in research and education in Bioinformatics. To achieve this, it strives to bring together all Bioinformatics-related research and teaching activities across campus into one multidisciplinary hub of excellence. It aims to secure TAU's future as a leading force in the development of novel drugs and biomedical technologies that will improve human health worldwide. To do so, the Program undertakes the following activities:
  • Recruit several new outstanding young faculty members over the next few years.
  • Establish an interdisciplinary graduate program in Bioinformatics.
  • Establish a graduate fellowship program to support graduate candidates in Bioinformatics.
  • Create a dedicated post-doctoral fellowship program in Bioinformatics.
  • Enhance the computational infrastructure available to Bioinformatics at TAU in terms of hardware as well as software engineers.
  • Encourage and support state of the art collaborative research-enhancing activities, such as conferences and workshops
  • Establish a distinguished visiting scholars program to bring international Bioinformatics leaders to lecture, interact and collaborate with TAU students and faculty members.
Researchers and students from Life Sciences, Exact Sciences, Medicine and Engineering collaborate and interact in the program's activities. The backing for joint research and cross-discipline interaction brings coherence and synergy to this important field.
